Don’t call MAGAs conservatives! [1]

Names are important. Names carry unstated connotations.

The world’s first conservative is said to have been Edmund Burke. He was a Whig Member of the British Parliament from 1765 to 1794. He revered rule of law, institutions, and precedent. He despised the French revolution, but supported the American colonists by saying that they should be allowed to elect representatives to parliament.

Until the 21st century conservatives continued to respect rule of law, institutions, and precedent. No longer. The MAGAs are trampling over rule of law, institutions, and precedent. In case you’ve been living under a rock:

The Jan 6 Insurrection.

The destruction of the regulatory protections provided by federal agencies as promised by Project 2025

The reversal of Roe v. Wade after nearly 50 years of supporting decisions.

I could go on but my keyboard would break.

No, the MAGAs are not conservatives. Find something else to call them, fascists, authoritarians, whatever. But not conservatives.

Again, names carry connotations. Authoritarians idolize strong leaders. Extreme authoritarians don’t even understand the concept of rule of law. Because science is based on (physical) laws, they don’t understand that either. Because authoritarians don’t understand laws, the only thing that prevents the world dissolving into chaos for them is a dominant leader.

Whenever anyone uses the term conservative in reference to a MAGA, remind them what a conservative actually is.
