[1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2024-06-22 So, the Washington Post posted an article about how billions of people are feeling intense heat waves: “Scorching heat across five continents set 1,400 records this week and showed how human-caused global warming has made catastrophic temperatures commonplace.” The article goes on to describe deaths in Delhi, tourists in Athens and over 100 pilgrims in Mecca. Seems like a big deal. When I’ve written about the Climate Crisis here, I always get at least some ill-informed criticism in the comments. I’ve been told by “experts” on this site that it’s physically impossible to generate high heat with solar, even though I drive by solar plants in the southwest that generate over 1000° F every day. I’ve been told to “F-off” by “experts” on this site who refuse to explain how the climate-driven wildfire problem can be solved simply by starting more wildfires. And a much better and far more popular writer here was given a time-out for interpreting “reaching a tipping point” as “passing a tipping point”, when all the evidence shows us not doing enough to stop. (Zeno would have loved that admin logic). Denial and resistance are common everywhere these days, but I’m disappointed when I see it on my favorite site. Some folks here argue against electric cars and argue that it’s much worse to use a tiny amount of land for lithium mining instead of continuing to use a huge amount of land for fossil fuel extraction. Some anti-crisis comments parrot right-wing talking points and have trouble with basic economic concepts like ‘every solar panel or wind turbine lowers gas prices’. Seems like many folks here prefer vague statements of “optimism”, comforting photos of plants and animals that haven’t been killed yet, and to ignore how hot it is right now at the very beginning of summer almost everywhere, no matter how historic and lethal. Politically, I understand that the “youth vote” might be important for the upcoming election, and they have a stake in the future, even if others have given up. The last mass extinction happened 2000 times as long ago as humans evolved, so we have no experience dealing with the consequences we have unleashed. However comfortable it may feel to ignore the climate crisis, it will continue to make life on earth more miserable until we deal with it. So, having said everything I could think of to bias the poll in the correct direction, please vote responsibly.
