[1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2024-06-22 Good Morning! I put that shady woods photo up for any of us who are still stuck in a heat wave like up here in central NYS. We are a friendly group who love to dig in the dirt whether outdoors or with our potted indoor plants. Everyone is welcome! We’re here Saturday and Sunday. Some of us drop by during the week. And we sometimes get SILLY!!! Today it’s an Open Thread to invite your gardening questions and also advice if you’re someone more experienced. Are you having problems because of weather? Too hot? Too cold? Too wet? Too dry? Any mix of those? Critters eating your garden? Houseplant problems? Are you just starting a vegetable/flower garden and need advice on where to begin? Go ahead and put those questions out there! I’m in the upper part of central NYS. We had a relativly normal spring and then it got very rainy. The night time temperatures even went down into the 40’s. That was in May/early June. I got slugs like I haven’t seen in years. We’re now finishing up a week of tempartures in the high 80’s and mid 90’s all the way to near 100. I had to mostly replant my grow bags of beets, carrots, parsnips. (I think there’s a “compost tomato plant” in with the parsnips!) Overin the vegetable plot, my pole bean growth has slowed down. I THINK the radishes, arugula, and swiss chard that sprouted are finally getting bigger. I held off planting anything else so now it’s….weeds again in the veggie garden. My plan this weekend is to clear that, plant some mini cucumber seeds I sprouted indoors. And also direct seed tatsoi (thanks strawbale!), collards, kale, and more arugula. That’s all if we don’t get….thunderstorms….. I have 3 Sully’s Dwarf Gina (thanks to seeds from DHM) that are big enough to plant out. They’ll go in a grow bag (aged cow manure mixed with homemade compost) and be stashed in the mini greenhouse with the root vegetable grow bags. I started them in the same container and don’t want to mess with trying to separate their roots. So, crossing fingers on that project. I bought 1 Sunsweet cherry tomato at the nearby food cooperative. That’s big enough for direct planting in the vegetable garden. Cherry tomato types usually do okay there. They seem to need less sun. I can always move the plant if it looks like it’s struggling. Hang in there with this up and down and changing weather. We gardeners are hardy, creative folks!
