Sea surface temperatures still rising above last year's alarming surge [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.', 'Daily Kos Staff Emeritus'] Date: 2024-06-22 Here’s a data point on the climate curve. Last summer, the giant leap in daily sea surface temperatures in the mid-latitudes compared with the previous recorded highs dropped the jaws of many climatologists, some of whom hit the OMG! button. Concerns have been heightened because of finds that deep water is also getting warmer than was anticipated would be the case by now. On the chart below from the Climate Reanalizer at the University of Maine’s Climate Change Institute, the surface temperature leap from 2023 is represented by the orange line. The heavy black line for 2024 shows surface temperatures are even higher so far this year. They seem, however, to be falling back toward last year’s highs. The trend matters; the noise distracts. (A larger, more readable example of the chart can be found by clicking on the CCI site.) The data come from the NOAA Optimum Interpolation SST (OISST) version 2.1. Temperature estimates obtained from a gridded dataset are “based on a blend of satellite, ship, and buoy observations.” Data are preliminary for about two weeks until finalized by NOAA. You can learn about OISST’s strengths and weaknesses at the NCAR Climate Data Guide. The researchers warn that “any apparent record high daily temperature in OISST should be evaluated against other datasets.” NOAA's National Centers for Environmental Information also provide monthly averages in its global climate time series at Climate at a Glance dating back to 1850.
