Trump and the Ten Commandments [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2024-06-22 If we must post the Ten Commandments in our public schools, let me offer a modest proposal. Most of the commandments are not crimes today: honoring one’s parents, taking the Lord’s name in vain, and just coveting items. We don’t have any blues laws anymore, so not keeping the Sabbath is not a crime, and without blasphemy laws, making graven images is not a crime either. The commandment to have no other gods but God is explicitly prohibited by the Constitution’s Article IV Clause 3: The Senators and Representatives before mentioned, and the Members of the several State Legislatures, and all executive and judicial Officers, both of the United States and of the several States, shall be bound by Oath or Affirmation, to support this Constitution; but no religious Test shall ever be required as a Qualification to any Office or public Trust under the United States. Let’s ignore Trump’s boast by shooting someone on Times Square and not losing any support. Trump, however, has been found guilty in court of violating three commandments that are actual crimes in certain circumstances. He has committed adultery on all three of his wives. He was found to have committed sexual assault on E. Jean Carrol and the sexual incounter the Stormy Daniels was never denied. He has stolen. Some of the obvious cases are the housing discrimination case, Trump University, and the overstating of his actual worth lessening how much interest he would be charged. The case about stealing documents has not yet been adjudicated. Finally, he has born false witness. The major example is the defamation of E. Jean Carrol twice but filing false statements on his net worth counts, too. My modest proposal: Post the Ten Commandments with footnotes that set out my observations about four of them.
