[1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2024-06-22 I am not sure if this happens to anyone else, but I thought I would write about what is going through snail mail these days at the little mailbox attached to my house. The picture you see at the top of the diary is the additional mail (outside of bills etc.) I received this past week, starting last Monday June 17th through Saturday June 22nd. In total, 16 different pieces of mail covering politics, nonprofits and others. There might have been more, but Juneteenth was in there so there was no mail delivery on Wednesday. Years ago, I sent my first political contribution to my congressman at the time John Yarmuth. I thought he did a good job, so he got my donation. This year, as in 2020, I have sent a small donation to President Biden. There is no question in my mind that he is doing a great job. Those donations opened the flood gates of requests for other Democrats: THE DNC THE DCCC THE DSCC THE KENTUCKY STATE VICTORY FUND Every prominent democrat, including former presidents, senators and speakers of the House have let me know repeatedly that our Democracy is at stake, and I have lost count of the numbers of times I am reminded that my simple donations will be doubled or tripled. But please do it before the next filing deadline. The nonprofits got into the picture because there are two charities I personally can vouch for because of the work and services they provide. Here in Louisville, Hosparus Health took care of my late wife six years ago when she passed away from lung cancer. The Salvation Army in Louisville has always been the true group I have seen taking care of those in need. I do consider myself a progressive, liberal democrat. I know sometimes to make money groups sell their lists to other groups. The explosion of nonprofits coming out of the woodwork has been interesting to see. Over the years, I joined the ACLU. That set off mail coming from plenty of groups who are trying to protect everyone’s right to do all kinds of things. Now that I am retired, I joined the Sierra Club. That set off mail requests from all kinds of nature groups. This week in the mail, I got two letters talking about how dire the bee population is in this country. My Dad served in Vietnam. You can imagine the mail I got after making one donation to the USO. The alphabet is well represented there. Usually, something new shows up. This week, it came from some group called Compassion & Choices. They advocate for the right to end your life. Don’t get me wrong. I am sure all of these groups have a mission and a purpose. But to be honest, now that I am retired, I don’t have the kind of money that would allow me to send the recommended donation for what’s being asked. So, I will keep going to the mailbox to see who is asking next. I will also be wondering how many trees had to make the ultimate sacrifice to let me know how dire plenty of things are in this country. Stay cool this weekend.
