[1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2024-06-23 When French President Emmanuel Macron decided to call a snap election in the wake of his centrist block's devastating defeat in the European Parliament elections earlier this month at the hands of Marie Le Pen's far-right National Rally (RN), he was gambling that if the French electorate was faced with such a stark choice, it would once again rally to his side as the best chance to stop the further rise of fascism. What he apparently failed to anticipate was the union of the numerous and traditionally antagonistic Left and Green factions into an unlikely New Popular Front coalition that could relegate his centrist block to third place in the first round of voting next Sunday -- but that seems to be what the polls are now suggesting.
