Heritage Foundation’s Orwellian President says he’s “non-partisan,” he just supports “Trumpism” [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2024-06-23 It is common knowledge that conservatives are not constrained by consistency or truth. Dr. Kevin Roberts went on MSNBC this weekend to provide another example of right-wing intellectual dishonesty. Let me set the scene. Roberts is the president of The Heritage Foundation. Heritage is a conservative organization attempting to give an intellectual veneer to an otherwise naked power grab by right-wingers - who think America would be better off ruled by the law of the jungle enforced by a plutocratic police state, rather than live with a democratically elected government. To achieve this selfish and dystopian goal, Roberts has birthed a blueprint for totalitarianism titled Project 2025 . This generically named effort is a 180-day transition plan to blow up the federal bureaucracy. And replace career civil servants with Republican Party apparatchiks dedicated to carrying out the Heritage Foundation‘s wish list. Roberts is on a press tour to sell his vision for America to media outlets across the political spectrum. In one stop, he told the New York Times that he did not care who would be the next president - if that person committed to carrying out his Project 2025. On the MSNBC show “The Weekend,” host Symone Sanders-Townsend asked Roberts to confirm that he did not care which president implemented the Heritage agenda. She said, “This plan is for anyone. It’s not just for Donald Trump … And so you reject the assertion that this was a plan cooked up specifically for the second coming of the Trump administration.” Roberts agreed. He added that because the Heritage Foundation forbade itself from supporting a political party, that was proof it is a non-partisan organization. In his words: The Heritage Foundation couldn’t do that because we are non-partisan. We can’t be tied to one candidate. Anyone who knows the zeal with which Heritage both pressures and cajoles Republicans to do the Foundation’s bidding, will find this disingenuous characterization of Heritage’s position to be pure bullshit. Unsurprisingly, Roberts took less than a minute to contradict himself. Sanders-Townsend pointed out that Roberts had clearly stated his political bias in the NYT interview. “You have said this plan is about institutionalizing Trumpism.” Roberts, whose face flushed as if to acknowledge he knew he was a liar, did not bother to maintain the fiction. He agreed. In his words: “The work of the Heritage Foundation is to institutionalize Trumpism as a new version of conservatism.” The MSNBC audience can be forgiven if they were confused. It takes remarkable intellectual flexibility to say that you cannot support a candidate, but you can promote a program named after the candidate. But that was just the beginning of the madness. Roberts is the worst kind of nutter, a superficially pleasant man who offers his insanity in a moderate and reasonable tone. But make no mistake, he is Looney Tunes. He insists that the government is staffed with “unelected bureaucrats” who think they are more important than everyday Americans. Further, he maintains that these agenda-driven, deep state agents are 95% Democrats. However, he offers no proof for that astoundingly one-sided statistic. When asked if he would accept the results of the 2024 election, Roberts said that of course he would - as long as there wasn’t massive fraud like in 2020. His proof for this imaginary “massive fraud” was a “database” that has “documented that (the fraud) over the years”. Political historians will find that reference to unrevealed bad actors reminiscent of Joe McCarthy‘s lists of communists in the State Department. This “non-partisan” then claims the “Democrat (sic) Party is very good at fraud.” Next up was illegal immigration. When asked about the logistics of finding and deporting 11 million people - a number equal to the combined population of HI, NH, ME, MT, RI, DE, SD, ND, AK, VT, and WY - Roberts replied that a lot of undocumented aliens would “self-deport.” This fairy tale is a conservative fantasy offered 12 years ago by Mitt Romney. Roberts’ delusion raises the question, if self-deportation were a viable strategy, why didn’t Trump try it during his four years? Roberts adds to the nonsense by saying that the Department of Homeland Security has “great plans” to forcibly deport millions. Again, either Biden created these “great plans“ or Roberts’ boy Trump had them and failed at yet another thing. Next Roberts brings up the murder of a 12-year-old girl in Houston by an undocumented alien. He maintains that the action of one person should determine the fate of 11 million. Never mind that the vast majority of them are law-abiding people, many of whom have done compassionate acts of alturistic civic duty. Flint-hearted conservatives find it hard to see the good in people they are compelled to dehumanize. Roberts then maintains that abortion is not healthcare - he should tell that to a woman dying of sepsis from a dead fetus that doctors are too scared to remove. He ends with the absurd, but oft-repeated claim, that the Democrats commit abortion up to three days after a baby is born. I have no idea what that means. What a toad.
