"Protest violence outside L.A. synagogue" [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2024-06-24 On Sunday, 6/23, anti-Israel groups protested a synagogue’s event which was advertising places to live in Israel. Violence broke out between protestors and counter-protestors requiring @60 LA police officers to respond. The story was covered here, here, and here to name a few. But was it covered HERE, on Daily Kos? I couldn’t find a staff or community article on it. I would think for a community such as this which loves to rehash I/P ad infinitum that such a story would have multiple diaries and be plastered across the front page for days. Why wasn’t it? Are protestors preventing Jews from entering a synagogue in Los Angeles not newsworthy? I can’t say I’m surprised this has happened. The ever increasing anti-Israel rhetoric on the left makes such violence more likely. The articles I saw make it hard to tell exactly what happened and if any particular side bears the brunt of responsibility. But frankly, it doesn’t matter. What matters is an ever increasing division on the left between those who wish to make anti-Israel sentiment a litmus test for “progressives”, and those who recognize that Israel’s policies are deplorable, but also see the danger of being anti-Israel instead of anti-Netanyahu. There have been groups working for peace in the occupied territories for decades. At least some of these groups identify the western Leftist response to be more problematic than helpful to the peace process. Increased violence in front of US synagogues will do nothing to bring peace in Israel/Palestine. Increased protests in front of US synagogues will allow agent provocateurs to stir up more violence. As someone whose family has been a part of a Jewish Community Center I know the dangers these communities face in “normal” times. A significant part of the Jewish community doesn’t support Israel’s actions, but I frankly don’t trust many of you to know how to make the difference between different Jewish groups. And NONE of the protests should be violent. But we SHOULD be talking about incidents like this. We need to be taking steps to reduce the likelihood of more violence and putting our collective heads in the sand doesn’t help. I don’t want our conversation in this thread to rehash Hamas vs Netanyahu. I would like it to focus on why we are importing the violence to the US. It only takes a few individuals to mar any action and I would not put it past Russia or Iran to attempt to stir up shit here in the US. We need to find better ways of condemning the actions of Netanyahu’s government without playing into the hand of forces arrayed against us. We certainly need to avoid violence. The division on the left around I/P is the greatest threat to the reelection of President Biden. What can we learn from this past Sunday to prevent things from getting worse?
