Julian Assange to be freed [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2024-06-25 It seems this whole affair is heading for a sudden conclusion. NYTimes: Julian Assange, the founder of WikiLeaks, agreed to plead guilty on Monday to a single felony count of illegally obtaining and disclosing national security material in exchange for his release from a British prison, ending his long and bitter standoff with the United States. Long story short, under this deal he is to fly to the Northern Mariana Islands where he will enter a guilty plea to a single felony charge He’s expected to plead guilty to an Espionage Act charge of conspiring to unlawfully obtain and disseminate classified national defense information, according to the U.S. Justice Department in a letter filed in court. Prosecutors will then ask for a sentence of 5 years, with credit for the time served in UK while awaiting extradition, meaning he will be immediately free to go back to his home in Australia. It would seem that part of the decision to reach this agreement is that Assange won the right to appeal his extradition and was likely to be able to drag this whole thing out for many months or perhaps years. So it would appear at long last this business is done with.
