Should males in the United States be automatically enrolled in Selective Service? [1]

A new bill that recently passed the House could significantly alter the process of Selective Service registration in the United States. As part of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), which primarily focuses on military spending and priorities, a provision has been included that would automate the registration process for all young men aged 18 to 26. Currently men are required to register upon turning 18 but it’s is not automatic.

Currently, failing to register for Selective Service can lead to significant consequences, including ineligibility for federal jobs and student loans, among others. The proposed bill aims to use federal databases to automatically enroll eligible individuals, thereby ensuring fairness and reducing the government's burden of chasing non-registrants.

While the House has passed this version of the NDAA, the bill is not law yet but has whipped up a frenzy in social media making it seem that it is.
