Why Trump's VP will probably be Doug Burgum [1] ['Daily Kos Staff'] Date: 2024-06-25 Doug Burgum says it doesn’t matter whom Trump picks for his running mate. And that’s exactly why, when Trump’s game of vice-presidential Twister is finally over, it’s likely to find Burgum the “winner.” In a Sunday appearance on CNN’s “State of the Union,” the North Dakota governor—who at this point has been away from his home state so long he might need a map to find his way back—told journalist Kaitlan Collins, "I think we have to just look at the fact that President Trump could win this race regardless of who his vice president is. He's got the luxury of not having to pick someone." Mr. No One is likely to be Burgum for two reasons. First, this “he has the luxury” speech might as well be Burgum jumping up and down and screaming, “Pick me! I will never upstage you!” Second, Burgum is the perfect ambassador to the only group Trump really cares about in this race. In the same media appearance, Burgum talked about the wonderful status that gives Trump such an ability to ignore seeking out a running mate who might bring a regional advantage or ideological balance to the ticket. "With President Trump right now, where he is with Hispanics, with blacks, with people under age 30 and with independents, I mean, he's very strong across the board,” Burgum said, “So he can pick someone that you can focus on, like, hey, let's get someone who gets stuff done.” That stuff Trump wants done isn’t anything to do with policy. It’s far more important. It’s dealing with the money men. Burgum may reportedly be only a hundred-millionaire, but he made his money buying into and then later, as its president, selling an accounting software firm. As part of the deal, he got a token senior vice-presidency at Microsoft that kept him piling up stock for a decade. This makes Burgum exactly the kind of faux tech bro who fits in at the pro-Trump gatherings being hosted by billionaires Elon Musk and Nelson Peltz. Now that Trump is depending on enormous checks from billionaires to propel his campaign, the only person that really counts, is the one who best clicks with Elon. No one checks that box as well as Burgum. This isn’t to say it’s a sure thing. Trump may enjoy the idea of seeing just how much humiliation Sen. Tim Scott can absorb. He may relish the idea of ordering Sen. Marco Rubio to surrender his seat and his state for a spot on the ticket. He might pick someone not on anyone’s list at the moment just to show that, as Burgum said, it doesn’t really matter. But Burgum has given a clear signal that he’s willing to lie for Trump, be his bagman, and never step near the spotlight. That’s a combination that no other hopeful seems to match.
