Fear and Fear Alone [1]

Okay, so tonight President Biden came out and … looked, sounded, and appeared old.

If you’re upset, ask yourself … ‘Why?’

Let’s be real for a moment. This isn’t a normal election and not in the sense of ‘a convicted criminal, former insurrectionist is a major party candidate’. It’s also not a normal election in that both candidates — the challenger and the incumbent — are very known quantities to the electorate.

Those voters saying they’re undecided at this stage are indeed undecided, but if an ‘undecided’ voter watched this evening and came away with ‘well, Biden’s really feeble, so even though Trump is a criminal insurrectionist who lies at an abhorrent pace, I’m for sure going with Trump’ … Well, then that voter wasn’t so much ‘undecided’ as they were ‘waiting for an excuse to do the wrong thing.’

So, yeah, tonight those who were waiting for an excuse to do the wrong thing got the excuse. And all of us who want Biden to win felt the sting of realizing that he won’t be a candidate who wins because of his good looks, energy, or youthfulness. The pit in our stomach tonight is the crackling sound of our hopes that Biden wasn’t as old or physically decayed as we all knew him to be.

He is in fact who he is: a historically successful, progressive, and capable President. Don’t let fear take you into a panic. The path to victory is clearly not going to be won with the undecided voter who thinks Biden’s age is a worse crime than all the moral mendaciousness of Trump.

The path to victory in 2024 lies with inspiring the often fickle, but far greater numbered coalition of Democratic voters. The bigger risk we now face is that our fear grows into surrender.

“The only thing we have to fear … is fear itself.”
