Worst. Debate. Ever. (But still sticking with Joe.) [1]

So our democratic country famously got its start when a few costumed radicals committed vandalism by stealing tea and dumping it in Boston Harbor and tonight it feels like our democracy could end because an old dude caught a cold and had an off night in an election that shouldn’t be close but is.

Overall, Joe sucked tonight. Not all of his answers were bad. In fact, most of them ranged from pretty good to excellent. Unfortunately, his demeanor failed to meet the moment. He stuttered much more than usual. He seemed angry and defensive and weak. His sense of humor was completely missing. Instead of parrying Trump’s thrusts, he should have dismissed Trump’s statements and taken the opportunity to speak directly to the American people. He seemed more like a good student trying to please a teacher with a correct answer instead of the strong leader of the free world. Trump, usually a meandering, low energy kook, displayed the manic, angry energy that got him the Republican nomination in 2016.

While this was not a good performance, I don’t think we should decide that the sky is falling and that we need to recruit another candidate. I do think Biden will have to figure out a way to take opportunities to seem strong and vibrant as well as relaxed and confident, and that this was a missed opportunity. He has been coming off as old and stiff as of late. Maybe he needs a massage therapist or a vocal coach or a comedian on his team. I don’t know what he needs but what we don’t need is a new candidate. Yes, Joe is old and yes, Joe might become unable to serve or he might even die. That is why he chose the best Vice Presidential candidate since, well, Joe Biden. Vice President Harris is waiting in the wings if we need her.

Changing candidates is not the play here. That is playing into Trump’s hands. But Biden needs to recover his mojo. I think he is working too hard, too be real. Being president is hard. Running to stay president while being president is extra hard. Yet I still believe in Joe. I still believe we can win and our best chance of winning the election and getting the second term our nation deserves is sticking with Joe. So yeah, take a minute to cry it out and maybe take a few stiff belts of an adult beverage. Tomorrow is another day, and we are not going to win by quitting.
