America burns if Biden and the Democratic Party insist on his candidacy [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2024-06-28 Surveying the majority of posts today in the wake of what was absolutely the worst performance turned in by a Democratic presidential candidate in living memory, one would think that Biden’s weakness and mental decline was a positive strength and ensures him (and democracy) victory in November. I am left wondering: Am I on the same planet with these posters? Are they all party apparatchiks or Biden campaign operatives? To my mind, no objective observer of the debate last night would come away thinking that Biden won, that Trump lost, and more importantly, that Biden’s performance cemented his prospects for electoral victory. Look, I’ll be honest: I was (and remain) one of those reliable, yet independent-leaning, Democratic voters who thought Biden too old and too frail to be a viable candidate at the start of the election cycle. I’ve scratched my head while many posted here about the strength of ‘Dark Brandon’ and his chances to defeat Trump in critical swing states. While I was pleasantly surprised by his performance in the SOTU address, the bar was set very low and he managed to slouch over it. It is clear that his performance that night was the exception and his performance last night was the norm. I’m not basing that solely on his debate performance either; I’ve watched numerous videos of Biden since the SOTU and he has appeared lost and fumbling in the vast majority of them. Frankly, Biden looks to have deteriorated markedly since the SOTU. He clearly has deteriorated severely since his inauguration. Honestly, Biden’s appearance and demeanor last night reminded me of how my mother looked and acted in the last two weeks of her life. Most of this was known, or predictable, to politically astute/high-information voters months ago. I’m nauseated that the Democratic Party suddenly finds itself scrambling — with very little time left before the Convention — to figure out whether to act, and if so, how. I’m so disgusted that the Party closed out credible candidates challenging Biden through the primary process. The very least the Party could have done to avoid being guilty of gross malpractice was to have a Plan B in place when Biden fell and couldn’t get up. I’m hoping they do (but it doesn’t sound like it). Now the scales have fallen from the electorate’s eyes. Even low-information/low-participation voters will have by now seen video clips of the debate and heard snippets of analysis. They will be even more unenthused to take the day off and vote for Biden in five months. If the Democratic Party doesn’t persuade/compel Biden to drop out of the race, then both he and the Party will be responsible for America burning in the Fall and thereafter. It’s that stark. I don’t think the argument that Trump is an existential threat to the Republic is hyperbole. If anything, I think observers have underestimated just how much damage a Trump administration will wreak on not only the United States, but upon every friend and ally overseas. Right now, Ukrainians must be sick with fear and loathing for what will happen to their freedom and independence immediately after Trump’s inauguration. If the Party puts partisan interests ahead of the country; if Biden puts his ego and legacy ahead of the country, then America will burn. And the free world will burn with it. If Biden’s candidacy is continued, the best thing America’s progressives and moderates can do is arm themselves with every automatic weapon they can lay their hands on, organize into a people’s militia/army, start drilling and be prepared to fight for your liberty and life. You don’t have much time to think it over.
