[1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2024-06-28 Lest you think I’m shilling, I’ll just say up front that Joe Biden was never my first choice for president. I wasn’t super-enthused about him in 2020, nor did I hate him; I was voting against Trump, pure and simple. All that being said, today I count myself a strong Joe Biden supporter, and the debate did nothing to change that. My impression of the debate was a bit different than a lot of people here. After all the talk of how Joe’s performance was a disaster, and he’s too old, and he needs to be replaced, I was left scratching my head. Did we even watch the same debate? I saw POTUS being decent, if a little tired, meeting a steady stream of outrageous lies with calmly stated facts. Sure, I wondered why his voice was so hoarse, but I figured it was because he’d been doing a lot of public speaking and/or debate prep. Every time Trump opened the bottomless void he calls a mouth, he spewed more whoppers than Burger King on Superbowl Sunday. Joe addressed each one with what I saw as a gravitas appropriate for an elder statesman when talking to a conspiracy-ridden nutjob. His “alley cat” crack got a real laugh out of me, too. Let the memes begin. Joe wasn’t “on fire,” but that was okay with me. I don’t need someone to bellow and roar and crack wise every other whipstitch to convince me that he’s a serious and capable leader. I would have loved to see him mop the floor with Trump’s made-to-soak-up-grime hair, but he didn’t. He was simply reasonable, doing his level best to field lie after lie after lie coming from a sociopathic orange gremlin. I’m about the same age as Joe’s son and I doubt I could have done better. Trump seemed as unhinged as ever. If he wants to accuse us of “Russia, Russia, Russia,” he gave us plenty of material for a new chant aimed at him: “Migrants, migrants, migrants.” The man is clearly monomaniacal, since he answered every question by pivoting to the mythical murdering migrants of ‘Murica. Then I saw the onslaught of post-debate negativity. I wondered what was going on. Was I crazy? Was it really as bad as people were saying? I mean, I know he was tired, but calls to drop out? Really? Certainty that he’s lost the race already? Dementia? Seriously? Today, people are still upset, but some folks have mentioned that Joe had a rally in North Carolina today that went well, so I Googled around for a video. Looks like he’s still got a bit of a cold, but he’s bringing his A game here. Of course, I wish he could have done this last night. Not that it mattered to me, but that it might matter to people who are still undecided. (Though polls are starting to refute that. And we still have four months!). Anyway, watch this video. It reassured me, and I hope it’ll reassure you. Joe is nowhere near done. Gavin Newsom was right — we need to stand behind Joe and keep working our butts off.
