[1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2024-06-28 I’m 76 and the world seems a far more dangerous place now than I’ve ever seen before. And what worries me is the terrible hubris of Joe Biden. Hubris means excessive pride or self-confidence . It’s what condemned the UK to fourteen years of hell, with the Tories selling off everything including the water pipes under people’s feet. And it was caused by hubris: the arrogance of Jeremy Corbyn, who, even faced with appalling poll numbers, refused to stand down for a candidate with a chance of beating the Tories. I see this same hubris in Biden. I worry that he is going to usher in an even more hellish period of world politics if he loses to Trump. I’m expecting push back so let me show you what world leaders say: “American democracy killed before our eyes by gerontocracy,” Guy Verhofstadt, a member of the European parliament and a former prime minister of Belgium. “Marcus Aurelius was a great emperor but he screwed up his succession. It’s important to manage one’s ride into the sunset.” Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski. “This night will not be forgotten. The Democrats have to rethink their choices now. And Germany must prepare at full speed for an uncertain future. If we don’t take responsibility for European security now, no one will.” Norbert Röttgen, a top ally of former German chancellor Angela Merkel. “Fairly disastrous. That’s the only way to sum it up,” said former Swedish prime minister Carl Bildt. It is time for Joe Biden to step aside for someone with a better chance to defeat the demagogue.
