" [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2024-06-28 So last night after seeing the aftermath of the debate I slept like hell and worried about how to protect my elderly mother and myself during another Trump administration. (Disclosure: I didn’t watch because there’s nothing Trump could say at this point that would change my vote for Biden and just hearing his voice spikes my stress levels). I dreaded seeing the reactions this morning but was pleasantly surprised by some. I do admit Paul Krugman’s response that Biden should drop out hurt, but the consensus seems to be that it was a bad night for Biden but certainly not a good one for Trump except indirectly. Here are some thoughts I have had in the light of day, as opposed to the darkness of a stressed out night: 1) Expecting that someday, somehow the corporate media is going to figure out how to deal with Trump’s blitzkrieg of lies and delusion is the definition of insanity. The majority of the personalities out there seem to have neither the integrity or even the motivation to do so. It’s time to figure out how to counter the fact that the “referees” aren't interested in whether the game is played as it should be. Fact-checking isn’t easy or sexy and might make for less exciting TV, but journalists need to understand that the First Amendment comes with responsibilities as well as rights. 2) Switching horses in midstream is foolish and would guarantee a loss to Trump. Biden is a fine, accomplished President who would do the best job in office of anyone right now, including the Democrats I am aware of who are waiting in the wings. He isn’t just going to suddenly grow Obama’s charisma on the campaign trail. We really ought to be voting for a President, not a prom king. 3) Related to the above, I would certainly vote for Kamala Harris but putting her at the top of the ticket right now would inevitably end in defeat. If she has a chance to show the country her abilities in the next 4 years and prepare a national campaign, she can make a good candidate. Throwing her out front on stage right now would not be fair to the party or to her. 4) Some of the panel reactions make me actually doubt my long-held belief that most undecideds just vote for the last person they saw on TV before they went to vote. I still don’t see how after all this time you are unable to pick between a decent and competent but older man and a rapist traitor with multiple convictions, but to my surprise some of them seem actually to have done what the pundits aren’t capable of doing: listening to the words the men spoke rather than just paying attention to “optics.” 5) The work that needs to be done is obvious, but national organizations need to understand the level at which most people like me feel powerless to affect the outcome. We can’t all be Stacey Abrams. After John Kerry let the Bush campaign destroy his honorable war record without a fight, I swore I would never again fight for someone who wasn’t willing to get down in the mud and fight for their own reputation and honor themselves. I feel like Biden himself would get down in the trenches with me, but his campaign seems to need some wisdom themselves. If he isn’t 50 anymore don’t put him in a position where he has to act like he is and tell us it’s not a problem.
