Don't Ignore the Elephants in the Room [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2024-06-28 == 2) If Biden withdraws from the race, he can’t hand over his delegates to Harris because that’s not how Democratic Party rules work. If he withdraws, his delegates become unbound and the delegates themselves at the convention would pick a new nominee. And love her or hate her, that new candidate is highly unlikely to be VP Harris. She’s not broadly popular within the party and she’s closely linked to Biden, who would have withdrawn at that point due to his political weakness. That’s not a winning combination for the delegates to just hand her the nomination with no squabbling. == 3) It’s unlikely the Democratic convention could make a decision on who is going to be the new candidate in time for that person to be put on the ballot in all 50 states. As it is, they’re having to pick Biden as the official nominee before the delegates even meet together in order to get on one state’s ballot. If Biden isn’t the nominee, the delegates will have to meet and pick a new candidate which means at the very least we will have missed getting any Democratic candidate at all on one state’s ballot. And if the delegates end up haggling among themselves for a few weeks over who the new nominee should be during an open convention, we could miss getting a candidate on the ballot in more than just that one state. == 4) It’s unlikely that we could get a new nominee out of the convention without a bunch of Democrats getting their feelings hurt in the process. We’ve got Hillary, Bernie, Harris, Whitmer, and Newsom supporters at a minimum. And likely every Democratic governor and Senator is going to have their own supporters who think that their person is the only logical choice. There’d be wheeling, dealing, and backstabbing to try to scrape up enough delegates to win the nomination. It’d make the ticked off Bernie supporters of the past look like a very minor affair. And it’d for the most part be played out, in a not very favorable light, on national television.
