The Debate- my thoughts [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2024-06-28 My take on the debate last night Of course I was disappointed with Biden’s performance. I wish it had been announced that he was sick but showed up anyway, to give a context. As Jill Biden said, he did answer every question and expanded on some. Trump was prepared by having a few talking points that he returned to over and over. I’m surprised that no one has commented on his obvious avoidance of some of the questions. It’s pretty easy to repeat, with fervor: “Millions of people from jails and prisons are pouring over the border and destroying America”. He said that at least 3 times, maybe 4 or 5. Repeating it when you are asked about helping with child care is egregious- why did no one pick up on that? He never did respond to that question, and several others. Why didn’t the moderators say to Trump: “Please answer the question you were asked?” Why didn’t Biden point out his evasions? It would have been easy to reframe to the debate to make it obvious what Trump was doing- sticking to his inflammatory talking points and avoiding the tough questions. Biden was heroic to stand there for over 90 minutes, while sick, and remain reasonable while being called “the worst president ever”, “the man destroying America”, etc. Did anyone notice that Biden quoted 160 or so historians who voted Trump the worst president ever? Or that Biden quoted facts and figures to show how the country deteriorated under Trump and was restored under Biden? The post-election analysis and hand-wringing is all about performance, not content. I’ve just recovered from the flu that is going around- it’s hard to talk, it causes brain fog, it saps one’s energy and lasts 3-4 weeks. This is true for several other people I know- perhaps Biden had the same strain. It is being mentioned after the fact, when it sounds like a lame excuse, rather than being announced beforehand, which would have enabled people to make allowances for his hoarseness and occasional confusion. I’m for Biden more than ever.
