[1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2024-06-29 Okay, President Joe Biden has announced he is stepping down. He will not seek a second term. He will retire to Rehoboth next year. Now what? Kamala Harris becomes the Democratic candidate. I would vote for her. I would vote for anyone who isn’t Donald Trump. There are a lot of people who think like me. I expect she would make a good president. HOWEVER, she is a Black woman. There are any number of Americans who don’t want to see a Black woman in the White House, unless she’s there to clean it. I’m not happy about that. I’m just stating facts. There will be questions as to her competency too. Questions about her background. As she is the daughter of immigrants, there will be questions about her birth, citizenship and loyalties. There will be ugly rumors and dirty lies. OR We go old school and choose a new candidate at the convention. Again, I will vote for him, whoever he is. (He will probably be white and male.) I will vote for anyone who isn’t Donald Trump. HOWEVER, whoever he is, he is going to have an uphill fight winning over some Democrats, and the all important independents. He is likely to be seen as weak. He will not have had as much time to campaign as Trump, or as much time to raise money. Many Democrats will resent the fact that they didn’t have a chance to vote for him. The internet rumor factory will go to town, saying he poisoned Biden, to get him out of the race. He’s working with Trump. He’s a pedophile. He’s a closet Muslim and God knows what else. In 1972, George McGovern, who didn’t expect to be the Democratic nominee, chose a guy nobody had ever heard of, Tom Eagleton, to be his Vice President, until it came out that Eagleton had spent time in a mental hospital. At which time he chose Sargent Schriver. It hurt his campaign, which, as he hadn’t expected to be the nominee, wasn’t that great to begin with. Nixon won by a landslide and believed he had a mandate. Trump will believe he has a mandate, even if he loses. I don’t want him to win. We can choose a new Democratic candidate for president. Or, we can remember that it is three months until November and a lot can happen until then, and stick with Biden, who had done a damn good job, though no one seems to notice.
