Be Careful What You Wish For [1]

I used to write here, long enough ago that I’m not sure when I stopped. At the time, I received some encouragement, so I decided to try it again. There aren’t nearly as many places to do such a thing anymore. The trolls have attacked so many places and shut them down. NBC First Read, NPR, PBS, and any number of other places have been my online homes over time.

I still think there’s a need for individuals to make their voices heard. Last week illustrated the need more than most. Everyone freaked out over Joe Biden’s unfortunate debate performance. I’m not immune. The subsequent nonsense, insisting the Democratic Party absolutely MUST select a different nominee, wasn’t based on feedback from We the People. It started before the debate was even over. It didn’t come from within the Democratic Party. It’s late afternoon Sunday now. I don’t know of a single prominent Democrat who’s actually said such a thing. No, it’s been driven entirely by the Courtier Press...and the world of Conservatives.

If the Democratic Party chooses a new candidate, who would that be? Not one alternative candidate has demonstrated through polling the ability to do any better against Trump than Biden. No one is even putting forward an option. Just...find SOMEONE ELSE. That’s no way to run a successful campaign.

It’s not as though I think Joe Biden is my dream candidate, either. He has, however, been a more successful, more substantive, more liberal President than I imagined he would be. I would bet large that any alternative candidate chosen now would be worse for Liberals like me. The DNC apparatus would coordinate a Corporate Dem/Blue Dog/reactionary centrist. They wouldn’t care as much about union rights. They wouldn’t care as much about decarbonizing the economy. They wouldn’t care as much about antitrust violations, or taking on the big banks, or a lot of things. They wouldn’t be tougher on the Netanyahu regime, either.

In the process, it would verify the old Conservative trope that the Democratic Party is a shady operation that runs everything from a smoke filled room. Under these circumstances it would be true. We would start with a candidate who would be way behind Trump. The change would piss off a whole bunch of Democratic voters. Kamala Harris gets a lot of grief, but she’s also very popular with some specific groups of voters. Kiss her goodbye. In fact, it would be massively demoralizing to the entire Democratic base.

So ride it out. Did you know the polls are still within the margin of error, despite Joe Biden’s no good, very bad debate? You can be excused for not knowing. The Courtier Press isn’t talking about that.
