[1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2024-06-30 20 years ago, during the Kerry/Bush debate, George W Bush asked America a question. “Do you wanna buy some wood?” It struck me at the time as the stupidest moment in debate history. In my opinion Kerry wiped the floor with Bush in each of those debates and the American public should see clearly that Kerry was the more qualified candidate. Kerry should have won handily in 2004. Right? Since then I’ve learned a lesson that it often doesn’t matter who won what debate when it comes down to voting. I am keeping that in mind as the pundit class hyperventilates over Joe Biden’s Thursday debate performance. Us liberals and lefties think we're smart and know better but conservatives are often more politically astute. We've had decades of Republican presidents less qualified than Biden on his worst day. Their strategy is simple. They want a president who is a warm body with a pen to sign bills and appoint Federalist Society judges. They have played the long game and you can see the fruits of their labor with Republican Supreme Court Justices appointed during Bush's second term. The Republican voting public knows what's at stake. They know that Bush II or Trump are not supermen. As issues such as the overturning of Roe plus years of Trump hell that we all lived through have woken up the public, my hopeful sense is that this election will not be determined by undecided voters. Those of us who are decided just need to show up and vote in overwhelming numbers. Vote for Democratic congress and senate and a Democratic president who will sign their bills and appoint judges who will block the Federalist Society agenda. We don't need a superman. We don't need an entertainer. Yes Joe is not in his prime and the 6/27 debate didn't go well. But the talking heads and pundits need to be called out loudly for their double standard where the Republicans are allowed to say the stupidest, most insanely dishonest stuff in the world but a Democrat must be perfect, but not too perfect. The Republicans and their allies in the so-called liberal media have foisted years of “I'm the decider” and “Inject bleach” BS on us. They will have to put up with 4 more years of the old guy and should be told off John Fetterman style. We know now what's at stake. We just need a warm body to sign Democratic legislation to protect everything we care about such as abortion rights, the environment, civil rights, and many other things that are under attack. We need a president who will appoint judges who won't twist the law against these things. Joe is much more than that, an in my opinion one of the greatest presidents of my lifetime. He will continue to be great as his job doesn’t require him to quickly come up with zingers against pathological liars. He’s always been a stutterer and a rambler and was off his game on Thursday but as the transcript of the debate shows, he knows what he’s talking about. The people calling for him to step down are not our friends. They are chomping at the bit for the chaos and “Dems in disarray” headlines that would be unleashed. Even if there is a better candidate out there, the chaos and split would favor Trump. That ship has sailed and Joe is our guy. So yes, let's buy some wood. Let's chop that wood and carry water and stand with Joe.
