Beryl Becomes Earliest Category 5 Atlantic Hurricane Ever [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2024-07-01 Hurricane Beryl slashed through little Carriacou island and the Grenadines north of Granada earlier today as a strong category 4 hurricane. Beryl is in the top ten Atlantic hurricanes on record for rapid intensification to category 4 on top of being the only June hurricane to become category 4 in the open Atlantic. Now it has become the earliest category 5 Atlantic hurricane on record. www.nhc.noaa.gov/...? Hurricane Beryl Discussion Number 14 NWS National Hurricane Center Miami FL AL0220241100 PM AST Mon Jul 01 2024 Data from a NOAA-P3 Hurricane Hunter aircraft tonight has been quite helpful in assessing Beryl's structure and intensity. Within the past hour, the aircraft measured a peak 700-mb flight-level wind of 157 kt in the northeastern quadrant. A typical 90 percent reduction translates to a maximum sustained wind of 140 kt, which makes Beryl a potentially catastrophic Category 5 hurricane. This is the earliest Category 5 hurricane observed in the Atlantic basin on record, and only the second Category 5 hurricane to occur in July after Hurricane Emily in 2005. Record warmth of the waters in the north Atlantic’s main development region is the main culprit in this event of unprecedented storm intensification in late June and the first of July. Record high ocean heat content combined with unseasonably low wind shear created an exceptional environment for tropical storm intensification. Unfortunately, the heat content of the tropical north Atlantic continues to increase into the middle of September, so this is likely just the first intense storm of the season. Beryl is a threat to Jamaica, but fortunately, wind shear is forecast to increase on Beryl’s track well before Jamaica and is expected to cause considerable weakening so that Jamaica will likely not be threatened by a catastrophic category 4 or 5 hurricane. The present hurricane center forecast tracks Beryl south of Jamaica, but the cone of uncertainty includes Jamaica so Jamaica has been given a hurricane warning. Hurricane Beryl is a threat to strike the Yucatan peninsula on Friday July the 5th, but does not appear to threaten the United States, with the possible exception of south Texas, at this time. Later in the hurricane season expect tracks to move further north. The general expectation is for hurricanes to be stronger in August and September than in July. This means that the Caribbean, the Gulf coast and the east coast of Florida are in danger of exceptionally strong hurricanes in the months to come.
