Biden: Please Deliver An Oval Office Address [1]

A trending diary this morning asserts that President Biden could win reelection because of the Supreme Court decision, “if he chooses to act.”

I believe he could also completely flip the current “Biden too old” narrative — if he chooses to act.

Here’s how he could, and in my opinion should, act.

He should deliver an oval office address.

Many commenters will say what I am proposing below is a campaign speech, and they’ll argue that’s not fitting for the oval office. My response is, the Supreme Court just threw out any such considerations.

The rationale for the speech is obvious: the Court has just ruled (as another diarist has written) that as of this morning the U.S. is no longer a nation of laws. This cannot stand. It goes against the founding principles of this country, it goes against the Constitution, and it creates an imperial presidency.

This simply cannot stand, and Biden needs to state unequivocally he will never govern like a monarch.

After making that case, Biden needs to present a vision for the future of this country for people to rally around. He needs to state that if he is reelected — and if Democrats can gain control of Congress — he will push for every single one of the overwhelming popular policies that show up in opinion survey after opinion survey: abortion rights, voting rights, gun control, you know the rest.

But more than that, he should pledge that, if Democrats gain full governmental control, the Supreme Court will be expanded — not to achieve a liberal agenda, but — and he needs to stress this point — to provide the balance that is now clearly lacking and which an imperial Trump presidency would only exacerbate.

If he does this, he will clarify the issues in a way the electorate desperately needs right now. But if he delivers a forceful speech, he will also change the narrative about last week’s debate. Lastly, he will show himself as a serious, sure-footed candidate in comparison to the completely unserious and unsound Trump.

It’s time to make the choice irrefutably clear. It’s time for the people to decide what kind of a country they actually want. I believe that, if Biden does that, he will not only win reelection, but he will become a pivotal figure in American history.
