Democrats Need to Stop Wetting the Bed and Start Getting to Work [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2024-07-01 The recent call from the New York Times editorial board for President Joe Biden to step aside in the 2024 presidential election is not only impractical and detrimental to the Democratic Party's goals, it is the ultimate continuation of a pattern of Democrats wetting the bed. More importantly, this proposal is deeply flawed, misguided, and downright stupid. Democrats need to rally behind Joe Biden instead of searching for some magical as of yet undefined replacement. One of the primary reasons why replacing Biden at this stage is infeasible is financial. The Biden-Harris campaign has raised substantial funds from donors who specifically support Joe Biden. These donors expect their contributions to be used to reelect him, not to fund another candidate's campaign. There is no legal mechanism for Joe Biden to transfer these funds to another campaign, such as Gavin Newsom’s, without violating campaign finance laws. This financial barrier alone makes a sudden switch not just impractical, but virtually impossible. History has shown that last-minute candidate replacements are rarely successful. Take the 1968 Democratic National Convention as an example. The attempt to replace Lyndon B. Johnson with Hubert Humphrey, while dealing with internal party conflicts and public unrest, ultimately resulted in a loss to Richard Nixon. Despite any merits a popular governor may have, they remain largely unknown to the broader electorate. Familiarity and established trust with the public are crucial, and these cannot be built overnight. There's an argument that given the specific dangers posed by convicted felonDonald Trump, the electorate will rally around anyone who opposes him. This is a valid point that may carry some water, but the solution is not to replace a sitting president who has already proven his ability to win against convicted felon Trump. Instead, Democrats should, and ultimately will, rally around Joe Biden. His leadership and experience are known quantities, and he has already demonstrated his capacity to beat convicted felon Trump, in a national election. Electing a president requires a massive, coordinated effort. It involves canvassing neighborhoods, making phone calls, donating money, encouraging friends to donate, and volunteering time and resources. Joe Biden cannot do this alone. He needs the full support of the Democratic Party and its base. This is a collective effort, akin to a football game where President Biden is the quarterback. He can’t score by himself; he needs the entire team to work together to move the ball down the field and secure a victory. Yes, our quarterback may be injured but that just means we have to work a little bit harder. Joe Biden has dedicated the majority of his life to serving this country. He has endured personal tragedies, including the loss of his son, Beau Biden, which was inextricably linked to Beau’s service to the United States. Biden’s resilience and dedication to public service are testaments to his character and commitment. He is a decent human being who has always put the country first, and now, more than ever, he needs our support. Instead of running around with their hair on fire and peeing the bed to the point of saturation, Democrats need to get on the team and do their part. This is not the time for panic or indecision. It's time to roll up our sleeves, unite behind Joe Biden, and work tirelessly to ensure his reelection. The stakes are too high, and the risks of a divided party are too great.
