[1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2024-07-01 If that doesn’t concern you, or you think people like me with concerns about the debate are a small portion of Democrats My position is the debate was damaging to President Biden’s reelection campaign. I don’t support him stepping down or aside. I want President Biden to continue his campaign. I just want him to show America he is fit and capable of providing another term as good or better than his first. There have been some great ideas presented here for reassuring Democrats and all Americans that President Biden is still up to the challenge of being President for four more years. Yesterday people suggested tv interviews, radio interviews, and Town Halls. Today the idea of interviews on social media was added. After SCOTUS made the President a King several people suggested a press conference on this ridiculous ruling could also show Biden’s is still sharp and ready to represent the interests of the majority of Americans. Others have suggested doing this with a Presidential Address from the Oval Office in response, again killing two birds with one stone. I think as a joke, someone suggested Taylor Swift could interview President Biden. Several people now have suggested President Biden have a weekly YouTube show where he talks with interesting people. Lastly, someone suggested President Biden had a TV crew follow him around as he goes about the day to day work of the Presidency. Keep those ideas coming. The two charts I’ve presented are from CBS News/You Gov before and after debate polling. It is worth noting that the before was June 2nd, 2024 which seems an odd approach to before and after polling. This is the link. Here is one more Chart from this survey. Now let’s move on to Harvard Harris. The other new data point on the debate and its impact is Harvard Harris. This Harvard Harris Poll was in the field from June 28-30. Here is the link. I think these tables speak for themselves. That top graphic says the debate did have an impact on voters. Now I have to point out it is really too early to be sure if these trend lines mean anything. Only 51 million Americans watched the debate. Others are now interacting with it in media coverage and in clips on line. There also hasn’t been anywhere near enough quality polls. Harvard Harris and CBS/You Gov are considered rock solid professional polls but not absolutely A-List. That said today Morning Consult released a new poll. They went from showing the race as a tie to Trump up by one. Here is a partial summary of their pre and post debate polling. According to Morning Consult’s weekly tracking survey conducted over the weekend, 37% of voters say Biden is mentally fit — down 6 percentage points from a survey conducted ahead of the debate. Among Democratic voters, 68% say Biden is mentally fit, down 9 points from before the debate. Both numbers are the lowest on record since Morning Consult began asking the question in 2020. Surveys conducted June 21-23, 2024, and June 28-July 1, 2024, among representative samples of roughly 2,000 registered voters each, with unweighted margins of error of +/-2 percentage points. Perceptions of whether Biden is in good health fell by similar margins, from 41% to 35% among all voters and from 75% to 63% among Democrats. Half of Democrats and 68% of all voters also now say Biden is too old, up from 43% and 64% prior to the debate, respectively. The coverage of Biden’s performance in the June 27 debate, which sent Democrats in Washington into a panic, is without a doubt the worst news cycle the president has had to weather in a long time: Voters are 31 points more likely to say they’ve heard something negative than positive about Biden in the past week — the lowest number we’ve captured since we began tracking the question weekly in November 2022. The reason I am harping on all this is because it remains to be seen if the White House will meet the voters part way and do unscripted, interactive, teleprompter events were we can judge for ourselves whether or not the debate was a cold induced one off or a sign of significant non age appropriate cognitive decline. I am guess they are going to circle the wagons, lower the drawbridge, go to the mattresses. You can choose your own expression but it all comes down to them addressing the problem by ignoring it. I am convinced if President Biden does nothing to assuage voters’ concerns about his fitness Trump (barring his imprisonment in New York) will be the next President of the United States. The public calls for such reassurance have begun in earnest. Mika Brzezinski said Monday that “America needs an explanation from Joe Biden and reassurance that the other night was a onetime event.” As I talked about earlier in this diary more and more people here talking about. I think I’m with Representative Debbie Dingell “One interview is not enough.” Though for me it would really depend on what interviewer, how thorough, etc. Note: I am working on a diary in which I examine Biden’s language, his word choice and the number of unique words he used in debates in 2020 and comparing it to his language use in last Thursday’s debate looking for warning signs of Alzheimer’s and other neurodegenerative disease. Given my obvious concerns I was surprised to discover no significant evidence and leaving a cold as a likely explanation. My wife insisted I send it out for review and comment before publishing it. This sort of analysis would be much easier if President Biden did more press conferences. Studies of Reagan have used those few he did and found evidence from as early as 1979 that presaged his Alzheimer’s diagnosis in 1994. The poll this time goes back to the start of this diary.
