The myth that Roberts "lost" the Court [1]

This Politico piece paints Roberts as a hapless justice, the “lonely chief”, just a “middle-of-the-road” jurist who ineptly lost the ability to reign in right wingers Thomas and Alito.

Here, CNN’s legal analyst Joan Biskupic tepidly claims that the “incremental” Roberts was “outmaneuvered” by the Thomas and Alito block.

In a later article, Biskupic, while again repeating the story that Roberts is hapless against the out-in-the-open right wingers, gushes about Robert’s upbringing and legal career, and says more than she probably intended: “And his successes have not completely ended...”

For Roberts, they are all “successes”. That’s his name signed to all the right wing court victories you can think of: the three rewritings of the 2nd amendment which will put guns in the hands of every crazy person and criminal out there, Dobbs, Chevron, now this. And it’s his own concurrence that immunizes Trump from trying to recruit Pence to overthrow the election. The concurrence even possibly immunizes Trump from rallying the Jan. 6’s rioters.

John Roberts never lost control of anything. Maybe he wanted his Court’s destruction of our Republic to be a little less obvious, but ultimately, this is how he wanted it.
