Tonight, I Feel Sick... [1]

Tonight, I feel sick.

How is it possible, some might say, to feel so sick over a United States Supreme Court decision?

And, mind you, from someone who isn’t even American?

I am Canadian. I have been with you on Daily Kos for fifteen years through the ups and downs of American politics because, whether we like it or not, if the United States chooses to become something other than what it has been, as it seems to be the case more and more clearly, it will affect the entire world, and especially us, your fellow neighbors.

I feel physically sick because, in the past, corrupt politicians or corrupt judges have always at least felt the need to hide their corruption, to pretend to be virtuous, knowing they could not continue openly doing evil acts and supporting evil.

This is one of the most disturbing elements of the Trump era and this Supreme Court: Trump is comfortable displaying his vices, his hatred, his corruption, because the public does not repudiate him after he reveals himself.

The Supreme Court is doing the same thing: the code of ethics, the appearance of judicial restraint, the desire not to stray too far from the consensus of the citizens it serves, all of that no longer matters. It has power it can abuse, and it abuses it. Who will stop it?

Seeing, today, some tribal reactions of MAGA supporters also made me sick: this blindness to any justice, as long as it harms the “enemy” and not them, these sneers and childish attacks worthy of schoolyards, the satisfaction coming from the suffering of “enemy” Democrats… Sadism, hatred, simply hatred.

This is a new era of open and comfortable maliciousness. How did we get here?

It is sometimes said that we get the leaders we deserve, and it is really starting to look like that. There are enough corrupt citizens to allow the emergence of a Trump and such a Supreme Court.

Who will stop them?

To those here on Daily Kos and across the United States who will attempt to do so, we are with you, so many around the world are with you.
