Dred Scott and Today, a Poem about the Supreme Court [1]

As history tells us, corruption of justice delivered in rulings by the Supreme Court has occurred in the past...

Dred Scott and Today

1857...

It was a time when the

Supreme Court was corrupted

with Bigotry and Greed

(bolstered by churches

whose leaders were dominated

by an inner avarice to control

its flocks and communities.

instead of being guides

for fellow travelers

on the journey of self-discovering

the Grace of God.)

The bigotry was rooted in beliefs

that only white skins

had rights and all other "colors"

were not human;

greed was based on

free labor for life

plus progeny – the economy

of enslavement.

The 1857 Supreme Court ruled,

in Dred Scott v. Sanford,

that slaves were property without

the legal rights of citizenship

and broke the boundaries between

free and slave states

and where slaves could be kept.

Three years later, the result of this

deleterious decision was

Civil War and the death

of hundreds of thousands.

2024...

History repeats itself

as the Supreme Court

of the 21st Century

is once again crewed by

a corrupt majority and displays

its own version of Bigotry

and Greed!

The greed is more personal –

money and gifts from

billionaires and corporations –

bribes of the most slimiest.

The bigotry is still rooted in

male white supremacy,

controlled completely

in the interests of the wealthy

and the boardrooms of corporations,

where money equals votes.

The cases of Citizen United (2010)

and onward to Dodd (2022)

and the latest rulings of 2024

including Presidential Immunity

are not decisions based on

precedents, the plurality's will,

or the Constitution, but the

rank agendas of warped justices

(and their owners)

desiring a dystopia

ruled by the rich.

Dred Scott's resolution

was Civil War;

Will the current rulings

from a corrupt Supreme Court

lead to violence as well...

Or can democracy work once more

to remove soul-broken judges

from the bench and pass laws

to reinsert justice into our society

and dwindle the power of Corporations

and the Wealthy,

requiring them to pay,

their fair share,

in society's upkeep and progress

through taxation ---

Time will tell.
