Joe, Make History and Give Us President Harris [1]

Biden has the opportunity to go out of office in a history-making style by stepping down and handing the Presidency to Kamala Harris. In my varied wanderings on the internet, I came across this story:

“At the end of the Revolutionary War, many people in America and Europe thought Washington would retain the reins of power to become the leader of the new nation, or even king. When told by the American artist Benjamin West that Washington was going to resign, King George III of England said ‘If he does that, he will be the greatest man in the world.’”

Indeed, it’s hard to step down, but it’s hard to be among the greatest people, too.

Biden has a chance to make history and at this point, we may not be able to push Biden over the line if he can’t help a lot, but we can do that with Harris. Harris is relatively young and vital, a fresher face, highly qualified, and probably better versed in the modern, data and AI-driven, political machinery. Also, given her experience as a DA, she probably has a better chance of dealing with an out-of-control Supreme Court.

Like many of us, I really do like Biden. I had issues with him in the past, though always respected him for being motivated by public service, not money. He’s been a really great, surprisingly progressive, president. I can think of many specific ways that I’ve benefited from his term: Smooth procedures for treating Covid, my retirement money doing well, highway repairs in my city, better maintenance to the small national park I visit daily, some energy related discounts in my new home, and so on. I think most of us can actually think of a few specifics.

But, wouldn’t it be a wonderful close to Joe’s career if we end up with the first woman president and then the first woman elected president!
