We Democrats need to agree on the game plan. Then we need to execute! [1]

There’s a lot to unpack this week in which we celebrate our independence from a king and his army. It has been interesting to read the myriad of thoughts and reactions to the SCOTUS ruling on July 1. I can’t help but think that we need to coalesce around a plan and FAST!

Recognizing that now more than ever we need to keep on the high road in order to be the party entrusted with this newly ordained level of power, I humbly propose the following:

We Democrats insist on bold, specific action by our party and our leaders. We call for the following platform for the 2024 election:

1- The party puts forth a Constitutional Amendment which explicitly reverses this poorly assembled decision placing a President above the law. Draft the language and present it to the public. Let the debate rage through election season. Show how it is fair, and how it gives power back to the people.

2- The party puts forth specific plans for reform of the Supreme Court. Show their corruption. Show the solution. Personally, I believe that the best plan is to take it to 13 with term limits, a rotation to the federal bench, and a lifetime restriction on any outside income related to the position. Show how it is fair, and how it gives power back to the people.

3- We must show the contrast between the two parties and their chosen leaders. Since the Supreme Court has remanded the decision back to the lower court, Judge Chutkan has been ordered to hold evidentiary hearings. President Biden must use his powers under the law, along with his newly ordained powers to not be held accountable if he crosses the law, to do one simple thing. Biden must use his power to put these evidentiary hearings into the living rooms of every American. Cameras in the courtroom regardless of customs, norms or current laws. Declare a national emergency if necessary. Force the networks to air them. (This one is for the lawyers to figure out…) If this needs to be scaled back, then just force cameras into the court rooms and air it on PBS and NPR. It will still get traction. Watch the numbers increase day to day.

If that is the only thing he does as an “abuse of power” then let them whine about it. All he will have done is force them to see what they don’t want to see or be seen. Nobody will have been hurt.

The Biden campaign must recognize its task of highlighting the stark differences between Biden and Trump, between Democratic principles and Republican power grabs, between democracy and tyranny. And we need to be the foot soldiers for this campaign. We need to coalesce around a message and stay on message. All of the other issues take a back seat to these issues simply because they all become impossible if we no longer have a say in anything that happens in our own country. It will be modern feudalism in record time.

We are now in a campaign to save our country. Nothing is sacred under the terms of this SCOTUS decision with the wrong President in the Oval Office. We need to act accordingly. We need to encourage Team Biden to demonstrate how we intend to use this power in such a way to return that power to the people. We need to show the American people that we have faith in them, and that we stand with them in this new quest for a more perfect union. I believe that if we keep it simple, focus on these three relatable items, we can turn this crisis into an opportunity. The stakes have never been higher.
