History Museum Explores Indigenous Gender Identity: “Dualidad: Indigenous Gender Identity in the American Southwest and Mexico” is on exhibit at the El Paso Museum of History, 510 N. Santa Fe St. The exhibit explores the Southwestern United States and Mexican Indigenous tribes and their connection to community members who identify as gender-nonconforming, including the concepts of individuals who possess male and female identities. The exhibit highlights tribes that have honored gender-nonconforming individuals as foundational members of their culture, as well as artists, medicine people and visionaries within their communities, according to a museum press release. El Paso journalist and filmmaker Robert Holguin Robert Holguin’s ‘Blood, Sweat and Beers’ on Popcorn List: “Blood, Sweat and Beers,” a music documentary by El Paso journalist and filmmaker Robert Holguin, is listed in the 2024 Popcorn List that features 20 noteworthy films yet to find a distributor. The documentary follows the journey of Los Angeles-based podcasters and musicians known as The Sloppy Boys as they create a comedy record at Sonic Ranch in Tornillo in far East El Paso County. The list is an annual survey of “highly enjoyed, independently produced feature films that do not currently have domestic theatrical or digital distribution,” according to creators and film producers Lela Meadow-Conner and Barbara Twist, who worked on The Film Festival Alliance. “Blood, Sweat and Beers” received the audience award at the 2023 El Paso Film Festival and earned a positive review in MovieMaker Magazine. The “rockumentary,” as Holguin calls it, will be screened digitally during a livestream on The Sloppy Boys’ website on Friday, April 12. El Paso’s Significance to Future of Texas Symposium: The Texas Tribune is hosting a daylong symposium on what the future of Texas may look like based on lessons learned from El Paso on Thursday, April 11. “What the Rest of Texas Can Learn From El Paso” will be held in person and online from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center El Paso, 123 Rick Francis St. The event features panel discussions on business and economic development, education, health care, and immigration and border issues. El Paso Matters Founder and CEO Robert Moore is among the panelists of longtime El Paso-based journalists discussing what they’ve learned from covering the border community. The Tribune will also host “We the Texans: Art and Democracy” from 4 to 5 p.m. Wednesday, April 10 at the El Paso Museum of Art, 1 Arts Festival Plaza Downtown. Speakers include artist Camila Abbud, whose work is featured in the museum’s 2024 Border Biennal / Bienal Fronteriza; Lupe Mendez, 2022 Texas poet laureate; and Stephen Ingle, creative director and co-founder of Creative Kids. Doors open at 3:30 p.m. Mother’s and Father’s Day Essay Contests: The El Paso Public Libraries are accepting submissions from local students ages 5 to 18 for the Mother’s and Father’s Day Essay Contests. Sponsored by The Great Khalid Foundation, the contest asks students to explain and answer the question, “I love my mom/dad because …” Winners will be awarded prizes to present to their parental figures on Mother’s Day in May and Father’s Day in June. Essays can be written for mother and father figures such as an aunt, uncle, grandmother, grandfather or others. Entries must be original and produced without the use of any third-party apps such as ChatGPT. Essay deadlines are April 30 for Mother’s Day and May 31 for Father’s Day.
