As part of that mission, El Paso’s nonprofit newsroom will partner with Gigafact to produce “fact briefs” that examine claims about issues shaping our community. “The partnership with Gigafact is one more tool we will use to provide El Pasoans, and people outside our community, with factual and contextualized information about our region,” said Robert Moore, founder and CEO of El Paso Matters. “Accurate and complete information about our community has been at our core since we began publishing in 2020, but is more important than ever in 2024, where the U.S-Mexico border will be one of the most discussed issues at almost every level of electoral politics,” Moore said. Gigafact was founded in 2021 to support local newsrooms like El Paso Matters to check unsupported claims in their communities, with the aim of countering misinformation and protecting the democratic process. Gigafact provides training, software, distribution help and other assistance to news organizations to produce fact briefs, which are tightly written analyses of claims made on social media, in political speeches and other venues. Each fact brief analyzes a specific claim and reaches a yes or no conclusion on the accuracy of the claim. Brandy Ruiz, a recent University of Texas at El Paso graduate and former El Paso Matters intern, will be the primary reporter for El Paso fact briefs. They will be published at elpasomatters.org and the Gigafact website. “We’re delighted to welcome El Paso Matters to the Gigafact network,” said Chandran Sankaran, Gigafact’s founder and CEO. “Their commitment to nonpartisan, factual reporting makes them an ideal contributor of fact briefs, and we are confident that their work will help inform not just El Pasoans, but readers across the country.” Other Gigafact partners include the Fort Worth Report, The Nevada Independent and Wisconsin Watch.
