YES The El Paso Police/Fire Training Academy will occupy over 300 acres in the Northeast and will have a swift water rescue pool, emergency vehicle training area, and a police tactical training facility. The $79.1 million project is funded by a 2019 bond approved by voters and is set to open in 2025. Activist and researcher Renee Johnston included the El Paso facility in a list of 70 “cop cities” that contribute to increasing police presence in those cities. The term “cop city” arose as a nickname given by protesters to the Atlanta Public Safety Training Center, a proposed law enforcement training facility under construction. Atlanta’s facility cost $90 million, sits on 85 acres and includes multiple training facilities such as a mock city for burn building training, a vehicle training course and urban police training facilities, according to the center’s website. Correction, March 22, 2024: The previous version of this story incorrectly referenced the Eastside Regional Police Command Center. The facility referenced in the “cop cities” list is the El Paso Police/Fire Training Academy. This fact brief is responsive to conversations such as this one.
