Neighborhoods & Shared Memories: South Central The El Paso Museum of History will host a series of family events for the closing of its exhibit, “Neighborhoods & Shared Memories: South Central,” dedicated to the area surrounding Jefferson/Maxine Silva Magnet High School on Saturday, May 18, at the museum, 510 N. Santa Fe St. El Paso artist Gabriel Gaytán will host a Lincoln Park Mini-Underpass mural workshops at 1 and 3 p.m., and a curator-led exhibit tour will take place at 2 p.m. Participants can also make a Silver Fox ornament from 1 to 4 p.m. “Neighborhoods & Shared Memories” is a series of exhibits at the museum that focus on different areas of El Paso. The South Central exhibit focuses on the neighborhood that was once filled with pear orchards and cotton fields, and now includes iconic establishments and institutions such as Lincoln Park, Chico’s Tacos, Ascarate Park, El Paso County Coliseum, Good Luck Café, Washington Park, Thomas Jefferson High School and the El Paso Zoo. El Paso native Luis Orozco, a baritone, will play the lead in the El Paso Opera’s production of Stephen Sondheim’s “Sunday in the Park with George,” on May 17-18, 2024. (Courtesy El Paso Opera) El Paso Opera: ‘Sunday in the Park with George’ El Paso Opera will present Stephen Sondheim’s Pulitzer Prize-winning musical “Sunday in the Park with George” at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, May 17-18, in the Abraham Chavez Theatre, 1 Civic Center Plaza in Downtown. The presentation stars El Paso native Luis Orozco, University of Texas at El Paso opera director Cherry Duke and Florida-based Avery Boettcher with stage direction by Justin Lucero and musical direction by Matthew Mailman. Tickets and information: epopera.org The El Paso Zoo’s Bug Fest features “cuisine” with ingredients such as scorpions, crickets, ants and water bugs. (Courtesy El Paso Zoo) El Paso Zoo Bug Fest Get up close and personal with creepy critters – spiders, scorpions, crickets, Madagascar hissing cockroaches and other bugs and insects – at the El Paso Zoo and Botanical Gardens’ Bug Fest from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, May 18-19, at the zoo, 4001 E. Paisano Dr. Bug Fest includes a bug cooking demonstration and samples of the “cuisine” – scorpions, crickets, ants and water bugs. Visitors can also meet the El Paso Rhinos hockey players at the event. Information: www.ElPasoZoo.org. Museums and Cultural Affairs Department Open House The public is invited to get to know the programs and projects sponsored by the city’s Museums and Cultural Affairs Department, or MCAD. The open house is from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, May 16, at the El Paso Museum of Art, 1 Arts Festival Plaza in Downtown. Staff from the El Paso museums of art, history and archaeology will be in attendance, as well as staff from the Mexican American Cultural Center, which is set to open later this summer. Attendees can learn about MCAD’s grants, paid gigs and teaching artist opportunities through its Cultural Funding Program. Other Events: The Lee & Beulah Moor Children’s Home 22nd annual Walk/Run for Families in Crisis starts at 8 a.m. Saturday, May 18, at 1100 E. Cliff Dr. with a 5K competitive run or a 1-mile walk. Registration: Facebook event page and Instagram. The Cool Canyon Nights Music Series continues this week with music from Dusty Low, with Josh Marin on the patio stage. The series runs every Thursday through Aug. 1 at McKelligon Canyon Amphitheatre. Patio performances begin at 6 p.m. followed by the main act in the theater at 7 p.m. Free admission; seating is limited. The city’s Parks and Recreation Department is hosting the “Older and Bolder Senior Cultural Games” from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, May 18, at Hilos de Plata Senior Center, 4451 Delta Dr. The games include cooking, dancing, singing, arts and crafts, painting and a spelling bee. Open to residents age 55 and older. Registration is free at any city senior center through Wednesday, May 15. Information: 915-212-0410. National Bike Month events include bike safety classes for children at 9 a.m. Saturday, May 18, at San Jacinto Plaza in Downtown, and a Downtown mural bike ride starting at 9:30 a.m. The public is encouraged to bring their own bikes.
