The area’s newest state-of-the-art pediatric multispecialty center, a department of El Paso Children’s Hospital, houses more than 30 specialists in its 35,000-square-foot facility at 5400 Alameda Ave., Suite B. El Paso Children’s Multispecialty Center has 52 exam rooms, including 10 outpatient infusion bays, in-house x-rays, labs, ultrasounds, echocardiograms and much more. Listening to the needs of the community, this new multispecialty center is here to keep families together at home, while providing them much-needed services. The children in El Paso and surrounding areas are able to have family support and not worry about the emotional or financial strain caused by traveling for care that was once not available in El Paso. “Our highly specialized physicians have also brought some of the most complex patients from across the world, here to El Paso,” said Amy Hernandez, administrative director of outpatient clinic services for El Paso Children’s Hospital. “In addition to our kids in El Paso, many patients from other countries and states come to us seeking our compassionate coordinated family-centered care for their children. We have recently treated families from New Zealand, Canada, and Brazil, just to name a few.” El Paso Children’s Multispecialty Center is prepared to care for more than 20,000 patients annually. With this comprehensive multispecialty center now available, patients who require a team of specialists no longer have to deal with the added financial and emotional strain that comes with seeking a specialized team that used to only exist outside of El Paso. “We strive for excellence and quality with every patient seen at El Paso Children’s Multispecialty Center,” Hernandez said. “Having this center has been amazing with its diverse group of specialists that help us have a seamless coordination of care for our patients.” Its partnership with the University Medical Center of El Paso and Texas Tech Health El Paso provides for each patient to have seamless coordinated care. With its highly specialized physicians and providers, El Paso Children’s Multispecialty Center is also able to offer world-class training for future health care providers. The Craniofacial fellowship program is one example of how a team of specialists work together to provide services to the community. This multidisciplinary approach sets El Paso Children’s Hospital apart from other hospitals. Everything at the El Paso Children’s Multispecialty Center is done with efficiency, swiftness and a high level of comprehensive care with a team of specialists that can be found under one facility. A patient’s needs can be taken care of within the same appointment. From the moment the patient walks into the El Paso Children’s Multispecialty Center, the effort to get them assessed, treated, and scheduled for future care is occurring. Already, hundreds of families from the region and worldwide have benefited from El Paso Children’s Multispecialty Center, including 1-year-old Jeremiah Torrez, who underwent surgery for craniosynostosis, which is a birth defect in which the bones in the baby’s skull join together too early. Complications with the child’s development can occur as the child grows and the skull can become misshapen. When Jeremiah was first diagnosed with craniosynostosis, his mother, Kelly Torrez, sought the help of specialists outside of El Paso, but all of them referred her back to El Paso Children’s Multispecialty Center’s pediatric cranial and facial team led by Dr. David Yates and pediatric neurosciences team through Dr. Ziyad Makoshi. “We came to find out that Dr. Yates and Dr. Makoshi were the doctors everyone outside (of El Paso) was referring to,” Torrez said. “So we called other cities, other states and all the doctors let us know that Dr. Yates and Dr. Makoshi were by far the best doctors in the United States.” Patients who seek treatment at El Paso Children’s Multispecialty Center can generally be scheduled to see a team of specialists within two weeks. Having doctors and medical professionals who specialize in various fields in one facility makes working together efficient and provides comprehensive care for the patients. “It really is health care at its best because it’s decreasing patient appointments and not only letting them see a specialist — but it’s letting specialists collaborate together, synthesize thoughts and get things done,” said Yates, the medical director of cleft and craniofacial surgery at El Paso Children’s Hospital. “I think that this multispecialty center is a game changer for El Paso. This is something to be proud of, treasured and cherished.” Having so many specialists under one roof allows for multiple team members working on a case to quickly assess the patient, and schedule them as soon as possible because time is of the essence,” Yates said. Jeremiah was initially diagnosed in June of 2023 and his surgery was scheduled for September 2023. Since then, he has had follow up appointments and is doing well. “From the moment we got diagnosed to the moment that he got fixed to the checkups even till today. He’s absolutely fine,” Torrez said. “They have completely changed our lives.” Torrez said having a facility like this in El Paso made a huge difference in her and her family’s life. “Me and my husband both agree that until you go through something personally, maybe you don’t understand the importance or the severity of having something like this in El Paso,” Torrez said. “These doctors and this facility have completely saved my child’s life and changed mine and my husband’s life forever.” For more information on the El Paso Children’s Multispecialty center and its team of specialists visit www.elpasochildrens.org/multispecialty-center.
