Monkeypox cases in FL surpass 300 in 17 counties; global health officials to address threats [1] ['Issac Morgan', 'More From Author', '- July'] Date: 2022-07-26 With global health officials gathering to address the monkeypox virus and other global health threats, Florida’s cases of the monkeypox disease have surpassed 300 and likely will continue to climb during the 2022 outbreak. The World Health Organization, which recently declared monkeypox a public health emergency of international concern, has scheduled a virtual press conference Wednesday to address not only monkeypox, but COVID-19 and other global health issues, according to a press release. Overall, there have been 310 monkeypox cases across 17 counties, according to the Florida Department of Health. Most of the infections are in South Florida, as Broward County has reported 151 and Miami-Dade County has 82, as of Tuesday afternoon. Orange County has reported 19 cases; Pinellas and Palm Beach counties have reported 14 and Monroe County has 9. The Biden administration announced in mid-July that it had ordered doses of the Jynneos vaccine to distribute to states to combat the outbreak, part of a national strategy to address rising cases across the nation and worldwide. The state health department has information on its website about vaccines, transmission, treatments and symptoms of the disease that can cause a characteristic rash, fever and chills. As previously reported by the Florida Phoenix, a state health official said Florida has ordered vaccines from the federal government. Nationwide, data from the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports the highest number of cases in the United States as New York (990), following California (356), and Illinois (344), as of Tuesday. (Florida’s cases posted by the CDC are often below the figures for the Florida Department of Health.) Meanwhile, meningococcal is another concerning disease detected in Florida, which has caused deaths and has been detected in 17 counties, state data show. The disease includes infections of the lining of the brain and spinal cord (meningitis) and bloodstream, according to the CDC, which created a web page within its website dedicated to information about the 2022 outbreak of meningococcal disease in Florida. Overall, the state data in Florida show 48 cases, with the most infections in Orange County (14), followed by four cases reported in Miami-Dade, Lee and Polk counties. “The meningococcal vaccines are available at every county health department free of charge to high-risk populations,” Weesam Khoury, deputy chief of staff at the state health department, said in an email to the Phoenix.
