U.S. leads the world in monkeypox cases, eclipsing nearly 80 countries where the disease occurs [1] ['Issac Morgan', 'Diane Rado', 'More From Author', '- July'] Date: 2022-07-28 The United States now leads the world in monkeypox cases where the disease has been detected, according to data from the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, a leap that has risen within a few months. The CDC reported 4,638 U.S. cases Thursday – the most out of 77 locations worldwide that have been affected by the disease that can cause a characteristic rash. Other countries with high cases include Spain (3,738), Germany (2,459), United Kingdom (2,432) and France (1,837). The Florida Phoenix downloaded the CDC’s global map and found that the United States’ figure came up with the highest number of monkeypox cases. The global map of cases from the CDC shows a total of 20,311 confirmed cases in 71 “countries that have not historically reported monkeypox,” plus 327 cases from six countries that have historically reported monkeypox. The Phoenix also reviewed a global graphic from the World Health Organization, which also is monitoring the outbreak. The WHO map has some different numbers in terms of caseloads and the U.S. figure currently is showing only 2,316 monkeypox cases. That said, the United States ranks second of all countries monitored around the globe by the WHO organization. The WHO data show Spain ranking first in cases at 3,125, and U.S. second at 2,316. The United States has been seeing rising cases for weeks now, and in late July, the WHO declared a public health emergency of international concern. During a press conference Thursday via telephone with reporters, officials from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services did not specify if the United States would declare its own public emergency, though the Biden administration appears to be considering the issue. At the news conference, HHS officials announced plans to provide additional doses of the Jynneos vaccine used against monkeypox and the importance of spreading awareness about the disease to all Americans. “We need everyone, whether it’s state and local health officials who oversee health care,” HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra said of those involved in responding to the outbreak. “We need people who are at risk, we need all Americans to do their part and take responsibility to help us tackle monkeypox,” he said. “Every American should pay attention to monkeypox.” Starting Friday, HHS will provide 786,000 doses of Jynneos for states to order, said Dawn O’Connell, assistant secretary for preparedness and response at HHS. Around 338,000 vaccine doses have already been distributed to state health departments across the nation, O’Connell added. At the state level, in Florida, there have been 346 cases across 17 counties, according to the latest data from the Florida Department of Health. Data show the most cases in Broward County (166), followed by Miami-Dade County (92), Orange County (20) and 16 in Pinellas and Palm Beach counties. Nationwide, New York (1,228) and California (799) continue to see the most cases, followed by Illinois (385), according to the CDC data. Florida’s figure from the CDC show 332 cases, ranking 4th of all states in the nation. Meanwhile, Becerra, of HHS, told reporters during the phone call that it’s possible to end the outbreak with preventative measures and that the Biden administration has been in contact with Congress about funding to respond to the outbreak. Still, federal health officials on the call stressed the importance of tackling the disease early during the current outbreak. Federal and global health officials have pointed to most cases among men who have sex with men, but anyone can contract the virus. Less than 10,000 Americans have received treatments for monkeypox, Becerra, of HHS, said. “Monkeypox is not COVID but it is contagious, it is painful and it can be dangerous. At the department of (Health) and Human Services, our goal is pretty straightforward: stay ahead of the virus. At HHS, we are doing everything we can in that regard,” he said.
