Protests planned across Florida as controversial laws go into effect [1] ['Mitch Perry', 'More From Author', '- June'] Date: 2023-06-30 Demonstrations are scheduled to take place throughout Florida on Saturday to protest a slew of controversial bills that are scheduled to become law. The “Freedom For All” events are being organized by the Florida For All Coalition, made up of progressive organizations including Central Florida Jobs With Justice, Service Employees International Union Florida (SEIU Florida), Florida Rising, Florida Immigrant Coalition (FLIC), Faith in Florida, and Dream Defenders. A statewide network of “partner organizations” consisting of Sierra Club Florida, the Farmworker Association of Florida, Planned Parenthood, Floridians Protecting Freedom, 100 Black Men, Indivisible, Rural Women’s Health Project, Progress Florida, Moms Demand Action, All Voting is Local Florida, and other local groups will also participate. The more than 200 news laws set to begin on Saturday include: One controversial bill passed by the Legislature and signed by Gov. DeSantis that will not be going into effect is the ban on women having an abortion after six weeks of pregnancy. That measure remains on hold until the Florida Supreme Court decides on 2022’s 15-week abortion ban without exceptions for rape and incest. ‘Historic’ to conservatives While the long list of conservative policies is the stuff of nightmare for liberals, conservatives have hailed the 2023 legislative session as “historic.” “I don’t think we’ve seen a six-month stretch that has ever been as productive in the history of our state, and I would put us up against any state in the modern history of our country,” Gov. DeSantis said during a joint news conference with legislative leaders at the conclusion of the legislative session in May. “I’ve been getting texts all day from people who’ve been in the process for years — one said 50 years — [who] have never seen such a seamless session,” added Senate President Kathleen Passidomo on that same day.
