With DeSantis down on social media ban for teens, Legislature starts maneuvering • Florida Phoenix [1] ['Michael Moline', 'More From Author', '- March'] Date: 2024-03-01 In light of an expected veto of the Legislature’s sweeping social-media ban for children below age 16, Senate President Kathleen Passidomo said Friday that her chamber will try again to send Gov. Ron DeSantis a version more to his liking. Gov. Ron DeSantis has been saying that he thinks parents should be able to opt-in their children for social media platforms — a provision the House and Senate firmly rejected in passing HB 1, a priority for House Speaker Paul Renner. The Legislature passed the combined bill last week and sent it to the governor last Friday. DeSantis hasn’t outright said he plans a veto, at least not publicly. In addressing the Senate as it opened business for the day, Passidomo appeared to concede the governor would prevail in the dispute. She proposed bringing up the porn bill (HB 3) as a separate item and voting on it on Monday. She mentioned an amendment planned for release later in the day, but provided no details about whether it would include a version of the social-media ban that the governor might view more favorably. “I know we all share a desire to protect children from content that is harmful,” she said. “As Sen. [Darryl] Rouson so eloquently stated on the floor a few days ago, there are differences for how to get there but we all want to be part of the solution. With HB 3 in our possession, we hold in our hands the opportunity to facilitate a potential solution to make sure this critical issue is addressed before the end of session.” Rouson’s district includes parts of Hillsborough and Pinellas counties. The Legislature is due to adjourn on March 8, next Friday. Speaker Paul Renner did not discuss the situation when the Florida House convened for the day. This story will be updated as the situation develops.
