Rep. Frank Fleming dies at 68 – Daily Montanan

Legislative leadership on Monday announced the death of Rep. Frank Fleming, R-Billings. Fleming, 68, had represented House District 51 in the state House since January 2018.

“We are sad to report the passing of Representative Frank Fleming following a long and difficult health battle,” House Speaker Wylie Galt, Majority Leader Sue Vinton, and Speaker Pro Tempore Casey Knudsen said in a statement. “From his work as Chief Federal Probation Officer and manager at the Job Service to being an integral member of the House Judiciary Committee, Rep. Fleming was dedicated to serving the Billings community and the state of Montana.”

Fleming was appointed to his seat in 2017, after Rep. Adam Rosendale left the House, and won his subsequent election. Under state law, the Yellowstone County Republican Central Committee will advance nominees for selection by the county commission to fill Fleming’s seat. In the mean time, Galt will likely appoint a member to take over for Fleming’s interim duties.

Fleming was born in Great Falls in 1953 and received bachelor’s and master’s degrees in education from what was then called Eastern Montana College — now better known as Montana State University-Billings, according to his legislative biography.

Gov. Greg Gianforte announced Monday afternoon that flags over state buildings will be flown at half-staff on March 8 to commemorate Fleming’s life.

“Susan and I are saddened to learn of the passing of Representative Frank Fleming,” Gov. Gianforte said. “To honor his life and service to our state, I have ordered flags to fly at half-staff over state buildings and grounds from sunrise to sunset tomorrow. We are praying for his family and loved ones.”
