FWP seeking public comment on elk management – Daily Montanan [1]

Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks is looking for public input on elk population objectives and local elk management as FWP looks to potentially revise its Elk Management Plan, last adopted in 2005, according to a press release Wednesday.

“We’ve been hearing concerns and interest from hunters and landowners about the current Elk Management Plan for a while now,” said FWP Director Hank Worsech in the release. “This is a great opportunity to participate in revising that plan. We can’t have a good plan without knowing what people want elk management and elk objectives to look like in Montana.”

FWP started working towards this in 2020, forming a citizen’s group to provide guidance made up of landowners, outfitters, hunters, backcountry pack guides, fishing and hunting guides, and interested members of the public. Guiding principles and initial guidance for the group can be found online.

Proposals FWP is considering for the plan can be found online, divided by region and hunting district.

Montana has one of the largest elk populations in the country, according to FWP.

FWP will be hosting a series of public meetings across the state through this fall to hear from the public. The schedule is available on the FWP website.

“If you’re interested in elk management in Montana, we need to hear from you on this,” Worsech said in the release. “Please attend a meeting in your area, go online, read through the information and make comments.”

“Once the draft Elk Management Plan has been developed and released, there will be additional public comment opportunities,” the release read.

Comments must be submitted by Oct. 15 and can be sent online, via email to [email protected] or mailed to Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks, Attn: Wildlife, P.O. Box 200701 Helena, MT 59620-0701.
