Montana Secretary of State updates wrong polling information – Daily Montanan [1]

Wrong polling locations in six counties across Montana have been corrected on the state’s “My Voter” page, the Montana Secretary of State’s Office verified on Friday afternoon, just two business days before Election Day.

Originally, the American Civil Liberties Union and the Native American Rights Fund had pointed out to the office that polling locations appeared to be incorrect.

Richie Melby, the communications director for Montana Secretary of State Christi Jacobsen, told the Daily Montanan that in September the office sent out a spreadsheet of polling locations to county election administrators, who are responsible for setting locations. Administrators then updated or corrected the spreadsheet, which was used as the basis for information on the state’s “My Voter” page, which instructs voters to their respective polling location.

The Secretary of State’s Office said it was first informed about the problem by the ACLU and sent information back to the counties, which updated incorrect information.

For example, Big Horn County listed five locations that are not actual polling locations, while Chouteau County did not list the county courthouse in its roundup of information.

“As you can imagine, updates cannot be made if requests to update are not provided to the Secretary of State’s Office,” Melby said. “The designation of polling places is determined by the counties, and the SOS Office relies on the counties to supply timely and accurate data.”

Six rural counties in Montana were affected by the changes – Big Horn, Blaine, Carbon, Chouteau, Madison and Musselshell. Voters are encouraged to check the My Voter webpage on the Secretary of State’s website, https://app.mt.gov/voterinfo/

It was unclear where printed material had the information.
