Lakeside lawmaker Tanner Smith running for governor in 2024 – Daily Montanan [1] ['Aislin Tweedy', 'More From Author', '- June'] Date: 2023-06-13 Tanner J. Smith, a Republican member of the Montana House of Representatives from Lakeside, announced Tuesday through a press release that he will run for governor in 2024. Smith may face current Gov. Greg Gianforte, also a Republican, who is eligible for another term but has not announced whether he intends to run. “I am running for governor because I firmly believe in the power of Montana values and our way of life,” Smith said. “Our state has a rich heritage and hard work, self-reliance, and respect for our natural wonders. I am determined to preserve and restore these values, ensuring a brighter future for every Montana.” Smith, a former school board trustee, said he will be advocating for energy independence, including sustainable and diverse energy to drive Montana’s economy while protecting the environment. He touted a focus on water rights to safeguard vital resources for future generations. He also said he’ll focus on public safety, taxes, education and constitutional values, according to his press release. During the 2023 Montana Legislature, the freshman lawmaker sponsored four bills, and all four either died in the process or missed deadlines. One, House Joint Resolution 41, requested an interim study on the impacts of the use of marijuana and fentanyl. Smith is also a legislative committee member of Fish, Wildlife and Parks; Taxation; Transportation; and the joint committee of Fish, Wildlife & Parks and Fish and Game.
