Gov. Greg Gianforte appoints new Commissioner of Labor and Industry – Daily Montanan [1]

Gov. Greg Gianforte announced the appointment of a new commissioner of labor and industry after the previous appointee resigned following a DUI arrest.

Gianforte appointed Sarah Swanson, who previously served in the department as director of strategic engagement and will assume the role on Aug. 14, according to a press release from Gianforte’s office on Thursday.

The previous commissioner, Laurie Esau, announced her resignation last month after being arrested in Missoula for drunk driving. DLI Chief of Staff John Elizandro served as interim commissioner.

Swanson served as chief of staff for the Montana Office of Public Instruction before joining DLI. Before government service, Swanson owned and managed a farm equipment business in northeast Montana that saw a “1300 percent growth in company sales” during her tenure, before overseeing the sale of the company, according to the release.

“As a lifelong Montanan, I am honored to serve the people of Montana and am humbled by the confidence Governor Gianforte has placed in me,” Swanson said in the release. “As a former small business owner, I personally understand the significance of meeting payroll, caring for employee needs, helping rural communities survive, and struggling to find qualified employees.”

Swanson helped design and lead Build Montana, which works to promote careers in construction and is a collaborative effort among the Montana Contractors Association, the Montana Equipment Dealers’ Association, and the MCA Education Foundation. Swanson worked with the Montana Contractors Association to provide John Deere’s proprietary training platform to Montana high school students.

“As a proven leader in both the private and public sectors, Sarah is a champion for reimagining workforce development and building sustainable public-private partnerships to empower hardworking Montanans,” Gov. Gianforte said in the release.
