University of Montana receives $8 million grant for health education, research – Daily Montanan [1]

The University of Montana received an $8 million grant that will go towards health education, research and outreach, the school announced earlier this week.

A press release said the funds were going towards the L.S. Skaggs Institute for Health Innovation, which exists under the Skaggs School of Pharmacy. The institute has three components, according to its website: rural health outreach, opportunities for interprofessional telehealth education, and implementation of precision medicine innovations.

“SIHI can creatively partner with communities and fellow health professionals to improve access to care across Montana, while simultaneously training our students to practice effectively in interprofessional teams,” said program leader and professor Hayley Blackburn in a press release Wednesday.

“We have the opportunity to be a national leader by providing a blueprint for pharmacists to expand their traditional roles in an effort to reduce the health disparities that exist across our country.”

SIHI also includes research programs, like precision medicine and pharmacogenomics, in part to use new research to serve communities who have largely been left behind, as well as provide unique training opportunities for student health professionals and researchers.

The funds were allocated from the Utah-based ALSAM Foundation, a charitable organization founded by L.S. Skaggs, the Pharmacy school’s namesake who spent time in Great Falls.

The foundation got the Institute for Health Innovation off the ground with a donation in 2020 in order to accelerate the adoption of telehealth and precision medicine training in Montana.
