Montana man sentenced to six years in prison for Jan. 6 assault on officer – Daily Montanan [1]

A Montana man was sentenced Tuesday to six years in prison on several felony and misdemeanor charges, including assaulting law enforcement, for his involvement in the breach of the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021.

Isaac Steve Sturgeon, 34, of Dillon, on Jan. 6, 2021, joined the mob on the Capitol grounds, eventually climbing through the inaugural stage scaffolding up to where police had formed a line behind a row of bike racks being used as a barricade to defend the Capitol, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Montana.

Sturgeon, alongside Craig Michael Bingert of Pennsylvania and others, grabbed the metal bike rack in front of them and pushed it hard against the police, injuring at least one officer. Both men remained on the Upper West Terrace for at least two hours after this assault, watching the brutal attacks on the police occurring on the Lower West Terrace below them. They both stayed on restricted grounds until police forcibly removed them, according to their indictments.

Sturgeon was sentenced to six years in prison, three years of supervised release, and was ordered to pay $2,000 in restitution. Sturgeon was sentenced alongside Bingert, who was sentenced to eight years in prison and the same supervised release and restitution.

The events on Jan. 6, 2021 disrupted a joint session of Congress as members convened to count electoral votes from the 2020 election. In the 32 months since, more than 1,100 individuals have been charged in nearly all 50 states for crimes related to the breach of the U.S. Capitol, including more than 396 people charged with assaulting or impeding law enforcement, a felony. The investigation remains ongoing.
