'Ride for their lives' event in Billings will focus on climate change – Daily Montanan [1]

Montana healthcare providers are sponsoring a “Ride for Their Lives” bike ride to draw attention to the fact that our kids’ health is negatively affected by climate change.

From 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, sponsors Montana Health Professionals for a Healthy Climate and Billings Trailnet, in cooperation with the Children’s Clinic of Billings and Billings Clinic Pediatrics, will host an organized bike ride.

The ride starts at ZooMontana (and the Children’s Clinic West End for the 10-mile route participants), down the hospital corridor, and back again.

There are 10- and 20-mile options available. Participants must wear a helmet.

The event coincides with “Ride for Their Lives” events all over the world.

Dr. Patricia Notario of Billings Clinic said, “As a pediatrician, my role is fundamentally one of advocacy on behalf of children and their families. It’s this kind of rooting for kids that inspired me to become a pediatrician. And while there are so many ways to do this with each family at each visit (talking about car safety, warning about the hazards of button battery ingestions, discussing healthy eating habits, etc.), working to address the impacts of climate change with the Montana Health Professionals for a Healthy Climate gives us an even broader reach to impact whole communities.”

There will be a break in the ride downtown at 1040 N. 29th Street. At the break, there will be food and a 15-minute talk by a youth advocate and two pediatricians who will tell a story about how climate events have affected their patients. Hank Jagazinski will tell why he is concerned about climate and what he would like to see and hear from parents and doctors.

Montana Health Professionals for a Healthy Climate consists of doctors, nurses, and other health professionals who see the connection between the heat-trapping emissions altering and polluting our climate and our health.

“The Ride for their Lives event is crucial to show each other as healthcare workers and the Billings area that we value investing in our environment and in our children’s future,” said Dr. Notario.
