Big Horn County sheriff killed on Sunday – Daily Montanan [1]

Big Horn County Sheriff Darrell King was killed in an automobile accident on Sunday, not far from the Little Big Horn Battlefield on U.S. Highway 212.

Multiple news outlets cited a Sheriff’s Office in South Dakota as first reporting the death, while the Montana Highway Patrol later confirmed his death in a two-vehicle accident.

The Montana Highway Patrol said King was in a vehicle and was hit head on, possibly as he was trying to pass another vehicle, the report said. King’s vehicle struck a semi-truck head on. The accident occurred around 5 p.m.

King was pronounced dead at the scene, and the incident remains under investigation. Neither speed nor alcohol is believed to be involved.

King had been in the role since he was sworn in at the beginning of this year.

According to Montana law, the Big Horn County Commissioners will appoint a sheriff to serve until the 2024 general election, at which point any successful sheriff candidate will fill out the remainder of King’s term, which would run through 2026.

According to the MTN television network, King was a veteran of Operation Desert Storm and leaves behind a wife and child.
